Young people often find themselves at a disadvantage in the labor market due to mismatches between education and skills.  This presentation will describe ways to not just help youth find employment, but the right kind of employment: employment that pays a decent starting wage with career pathways for advancement.  

A number of strategies will be described to help youth employment providers to find and prepare young people for employment.  These include the following:

• How to organize the pathway to employment

• Help make the connection to employers

• Develop training strategies and work-based employment opportunities

• Arrange for supportive services

About the Presenter

Pat has long been active in assisting individuals with disabilities make the transition     from school to work.  He led a school to work initiative for many years and helped         bring Project SEARCH to Iowa, a highly successful transition program.  Pat Steele is    the Site Director for Central Iowa Works, a position he has held since 2013.  He has     40 years of experience in employment services for people with barriers to              employment. He has held positions with private and public organizations, including Goodwill Industries, Options of Linn County, the Iowa Division of Vocational Rehabilitation Services, the University of Iowa Health Policy and Disability Center, and Mainstream Living.  In addition to his present position with Central Iowa Works, he also consults for the Arc of East Central Iowa and is a surveyor for CARF, an international accrediting body.
